Planning Intern
Role Summary
The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB) will hire up to three (3) motivated interns to assist the Planning Division over the summer months. Interns will primarily work outdoors counting visitors to the regional parks and trails in Minneapolis. Additional duties include assistance with community engagement, information gathering, park concept development, analysis, and other tasks related to park planning and design or strategic initiatives.
The Planning Division provides expertise to lead, advise, and guide the development and redevelopment of the Minneapolis Park system. The division oversees park system analysis and long-range park planning, capital program development, real estate management, design and engineering, and park construction administration.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
- Computer skills including MS Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and digital meeting platforms; ArcGIS skills and experience with interactive technologies a plus
- Access to reliable transportation
- Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions
Minimum Qualifications
- Course of study related to landscape architecture, urban studies or planning, environmental studies or policy, architecture, or park and leisure studies
- Demonstrated interest in parks and open space
- Available to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays (Memorial Day, Juneteenth, 4th of July, Labor Day)
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework and/or experience in urban and/or landscape design, strategic planning, environmental studies, or recreation management
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations
Background Check
Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.
Compensation
$18.00 per hour, non-benefited (mileage reimbursement eligible).
Hours
35-38 hours per week; Week of May 18 through September 4, 2026.
