The ULI MN Young Leaders Group invites you to join John Slack and Peter Brown on a walking tour of the North Loop in Minneapolis. Get a firsthand look at how, and why, this vibrant neighborhood has developed.

    The tour will answer some of the following questions and you are encouraged to bring your own!  
    • What did the North Loop look like 10, 15, 20 years ago?
    • What catalyzed the re-development of the area?
    • Why is it mostly multi-family?
    • How does the neighborhood accommodate the Bassett Creek Tunnel?
    • Why are the blocks so large between Washington Ave and the river?
    • Why can’t I find a place to park?

    COVID PRECAUTIONS
    • This outdoor walking tour will require participants, tour guides, and ULI staff to observe social distancing and to wear a mask/face covering for the entire tour.
    Day of COVID Prescreen Check In:
    • ULI MN staff will perform contactless temperature scan at check-in.
    • Participants will be required to complete an event waiver form at check-in.
    • All nametags will be disposable and will not be collected.
    • Hand sanitizer will be available.
    • We encourage you to bring your own mask, but will have a few disposable mask in case you forget.

    Peter Brown

    University of Minnesota

    Peter Hendee Brown is a licensed architect and certified planner and over the past 30 years has worked in architecture, government administration, real estate development, and as an independent consultant, serving in the roles of architect, owner, developer, and owner’s representative. He has worked for public, private, and nonprofit clients. His research is focused on understanding urban redevelopment projects from many perspectives, including those of the city official, politician, planner, property owner, developer, user, and neighbor.

    John Slack

    Associate Principal - Senior Landscape Architect/Urban Designer, Perkins and Will

    Former Vice President of the City of Minneapolis Planning Commission Having traveled to every US state except Alaska with his military family, John grew up fascinated by how people use urban spaces, and how buildings interface with them. A long-term mentor with ULI and city volunteer, John seeks to serve his broader community and believes in the strength of the relationships to get things accomplished. He knows he’s successfully engaged his audience when he starts to see a shift in their mindset - from ‘we can’t’ to ‘I hadn’t considered that before.’
