    Let’s Grab Coffee - Career Perspectives Two-Part Series
    Exploring the many roles and career journeys in real estate and land use


    “Let’s Grab Coffee” is a two-part program designed to assist students and young professionals in early career exploration and developing a better understanding of the wide range of sectors and roles within commercial real estate and land use. Each session focuses on hearing from industry leaders who will overview the core roles within commercial real estate and land use, followed by small group listening sessions to dive deeper into the nuances of their career journeys.
     

    The program will include two (2) sessions with speakers invited from key industry sectors including construction, architecture, engineering, development, commercial lending, brokerage, city planning, and elected officials.

     

    Two sessions:

    o   Friday, 10/27, 8:00AM-9:30AM hosted at MSR Design in Minneapolis, MN 

    o   Friday, 11/17, 8:00AM-9:30AM hosted at MSR Design in Minneapolis, MN
    Single session registration at 50% off is available for November 17, 2023.


    Session Agenda:

    • Coffee/light breakfast provided.
    • Hear from four industry leaders per session.

    o   8:00-8:15AM - Arrival & Networking

    o   8:15 – 8:35 – Speaker Introductions and Overview of roles

    o   8:35 – 8:55 – Small Group 1, Career journey stories  

    o   8:55 – 9:00 – Rotation

    o   9:00 – 9:20 – Small Group 2, Career journey stories 

    o   9:20 – 9:30 – Networking & Adjourn

    Speakers

    Meg McMahan

    Planning Director, City of Minneapolis – Community Planning and Economic Development

    Meg McMahan, AICP, is the Director of Planning for the City of Minneapolis, where she works to leverage development and regulatory systems to drive equitable outcomes. Prior to Minneapolis, Meg worked for the City of Brooklyn Center, MN as the Community Development Director where she led the department through a transitional time, which resulted in new ordinances, policies and approaches that were community-centered and met the needs of a diverse and dynamic citizenry. She received her Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and her B.A. in Sociology from Hamline. When she isn’t at work she is most likely camping with her children and two Chihuahua mixes in their travel trailer.

    Mitchell Cookas

    Practice Builder & Project Manager, Kimley-Horn

    Mitchell is a collaborative, creative, driven, and passionate professional with over 14 years of experience in sustainable site design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, water resources, construction administration and business development. He has worked together on a variety of public and private sector projects ranging from a quarter-acre residence, to a community planning workshop and professional sports stadiums (Target Field and CHS Field). His volunteer experience includes being a member of the Minnesota Design Team and he continues to support the Special Olympics of MN. Additionally, he was a member of Dakota County’s citizen advisory committee for the Farmland and Natural Areas Program (FNAP) from 2009-2011. Mitchell is actively involved with multiple non-profit and professional organizations including the MN Shopping Center Association (MSCA), U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and ULI in Minnesota including ULI's NEXT Group and the Resilient Communities Product Council. He was chosen as 2015 "Young Professional of The Year" by the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce and he was featured in Minnesota Business magazine for the 2017 "Young Entrepreneurs" edition! On the personal side, Mitchell loves spending time with his wife and 2 daughters plus other family and friends around MN and WI. He enjoys fishing, golfing, music, sports, design and almost anything outdoors!
